4:1 High Bias center diff ?

Recommended Posts

High bias center diffs are free. Search on it. I posted on Audiworld a while ago about how to do this for the cost of a gearbox oil change.

edit: I just remembered I have a spare torsen in the garage, so I will take pictures and document the process in a new thread if I have time this weekend.

Essentially you pull the diff, burn the teflon coating off the thrust washers, make sure that the stack play is within spec (it almost always is), and reassemble the torsen. You DONT need an expensive set of custom washers despite what most people say.

http://www.ecodetuning.com/shop/cart.php?m...tail&p=1709

Tuning the center differential provides one of the most significant performance gains available to the Quattro owner. The standard torsen center differential in the S4 and A4 provides a 2:1 torque distribution capability. This enables the end of the car with traction (generally the rear) to deliver twice the torque being delivered by the least tractive end of the vehicle (generally the front). For high performance street cars, we recommend a bias ratio of 4:1. This is the same bias ratio that Audi has provided in the stock RS4 driveline.

Torsen Differentials deliver more torque to the wheels that have more traction. The STaSIS high bias torsen provides a dramatic improvement in negotiating a turn quickly and efficiently. Now your car can be 3 cars in one( front, all and rear wheel drive):

Hard braking leading into a turn

Car acts like a front wheel drive – torsen acts like an open differential when its not under power. Wheels turn independently and car control is improved.

Mid Corner, Throttle On

Car acts like an all wheel drive– torsen delivers equal amounts of power to front and rear wheels. This maximizes grip, allowing more power to be applied at this stage of a turn.

Corner Exit, Hard Acceleration

Car acts like a rear wheel drive car – front wheel slip is rediced because the torsen delivers up to 88% of the engine torque to the rear wheels where the most traction is.

For Manual Transmissions Only

Core Exchange

There is a core charge of $1000 if we send out a STaSIS center differential to you. When you exchange your center differential for a STaSIS unit, send your differential back to STaSIS and we will refund the $1000 core charge.

You may also send your differential to us for modification and not incur a core charge. We can usually modify and ship out your modified differential the same day we receive it.

"The Torsen center diff varies the torque split between the front and rear wheels by limiting the difference in rotational speed between the front and rear driveshafts. Torque from the engine causes the gears inside (in simplistic terms, half of which are connected to the front driveshaft, half of which are connected to the rear driveshaft, and all of which are in-mesh with each other) to jam together as the front and rear driveshafts attempt to rotate at different speeds, almost ** but not quite ** locking up solid until one of the driveshafts overcomes the gears' resistance to rotation (i.e., the designed bias-ratio is reached) and they begin to rotate at different speeds.

When a car goes around a corner, the front wheels travel a longer distance than the rear wheels. With an AWD car, this requires the front driveshaft to rotate faster than the rear driveshaft. Whereas an open center diff can fully accomodate a difference in the driveshafts' rotational speeds but always splits torque 50-50 between the front and rear wheels, and a locked center diff can't accomodate any difference in rotational speeds but can split torque 100-0-100 and everywhere in between, the Torsen center diff behaves like a hybrid of the two: It's never fully "open" (which is why it can vary the torque split between the front and rear wheels over a limited range) and never fully "locked" (which is why it can accomodate some percentage difference in rotational speeds between the front and rear driveshafts).

To increase the Torsen's bias-ratio ** from the OEM setting of 66-34-66 (~2:1) to say, 80-20-80 (4:1) ** all you need to do is make the gears jam together more tightly (which is what the modification discussed herein does, by replacing a needle bearing or Teflon-coated washer with a hardened steel washer, thereby increasing the internal friction that resists differentiation) and thus cause it to behave even more like a locked center diff. The tradeoff, though, is that the more you make a Torsen behave like a locked diff, the less it behaves like an open diff. In other words, by increasing the bias-ratio, you're _reducing_ the Torsen's ability to accomodate differences in the rotational speeds of the front and rear driveshafts. [i won't go into it here, but if you think things through, you'll see that under power and with all other things being equal, a Torsen biases the torque split toward the rear wheels whenever the steering wheel is turned away from straight ahead and toward the front wheels whenever it's turned back ... ponder the implications of how _this_ might affect a car's behavior while going around corners, especially if you have to apply opposite lock to catch a slide or if you keep the power on and left-foot brake!]

As an aside, it's interesting to note that with its first generation of Torsen-equipped cars (Type 44 chassis), Audi set the bias-ratio at ~3.5:1 (78-22-78) versus the ~2:1 it used with its later chassis. I don't know if this reduction in the bias-ratio was done to address NVH issues or performance/safety concerns ** some people believe the higher bias-ratio resulted in quirky handling with the Type 44 chassis under certain conditions (aka as the "Spider Bite" phenomenon) ** but there's no doubt this change did reduce the amount of "shuddering" people experience as they drive around in parking lots.

Anyway, the bottom line is that what you gain on one side of the equation, you lose on the other, and Audi chose to set the bias-ratio of its second-generation Torsen (i.e., the one with one-piece housing) low enough so that most people never experience any shudder, even if this also means settling for a less than optimal bias-ratio so far as outright performance is concerned.

(Note that there are some Audi enthusiasts ** among whose number I tentatively include myself, although I've never driven an A4 with a locked center diff so I have no actual basis for comparison ** who believe that even the 4:1 or 5:1 bias-ratio of a modified Torsen isn't high enough, preferring instead the infinity:1 bias-ratio that a locked center diff offers, not to mention the consistency/predicability of a torque split that varies in sync with front-to-rear weight transfer rather than differences in the front and rear tires' slip angles.)

:steinigung:

STASSIS diff

jhmcenterdiffidentifica.jpg

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

washers.jpg

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

http://diffmod.plainbored.com/

torsendiagramaudiwasher.jpg

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

torsendiagramswappedwas.jpg

http://torsen.com/fsae/012000_washer.htm

/ It seems that the center diff design we are using is very similar in concept to one used by many SAE cars. In a conversation with Mr Toyoda-Koki Torsen he stated:

"You would want to disassemble the unit and remove the two washers that were referred to in the previous email (thrust washers). Replace those washers with an AISI 1074 or like steel washer. Make sure that the washers you use to replace the DP washers are the same thickness since we hold a tight stack tolerance within the unit. Also make sure that you match any chamfers, etc. on your new steel washers."

I haven't had the time to source the washers and pull the torsen out and try this out myself but Mr. Torsen seems to think that simply swapping the washers in and increasing the frictional value would be enough to pull the bias to the 4:1 ration we want without requiring any modification of the gears themselves. Maintenance and cooling is unaffected by this mod and if further bias is required, testing with various viscocity gear oil would help too. /

torsen.com improving bias info wrote:

Can the University Special be modified to increase performance?

Yes, to some degree. Since performance (torque bias ratio or TBR) is a direct function of the unit’s internal resistance to differentiate, changing the resistance will change the TBR. Most of this resistance comes from the gear design itself, and cannot be altered. However, there are other frictional factors that can.

For the 012000, changing the washers that are between the housing and side gears will change the performance. If the differential is mounted in the car with the large input spline toward the left (normally considered driver’s side), then switching these end washers end for end will give an increase that is normally favorable for this type of car. If the large spline is on the right when installed in the car, then the washers are already in the correct location.

For the M021-DHU, the needle bearings between the side gears and housing/cap can be replaced with steel washers of the same dimensions. Another variation would be to replace only the bearing on the left side of the differential (as installed in the car) with a steel washer. This may offer a better balance of performance between throttle on and off.

Using less viscous oil will also raise TBR. A more viscous fluid will lower it. If you are changing the oil, be sure that you still use a GL-5 specification lubricant.
