The cylinders are deactivated by the AVS technology developed by Audi. In accordance with the fi ring order, cylinders 2, 3, 5 and 8 are always deactivated. The gas exchange valves remain closed when the cylinders are deactivated.
The injection and ignition systems are switched off for this duration. While the cylinders are shut off , the exhaust valves remain closed after ignition and combustion. The exhaust gas is "trapped".
The cylinders which have been deactivated act as gas dampers. The temperatures in the cylinders which have been shut off remain at a high level.
Engine vibration is minimised by the newly developed active engine mounting system. To ensure that no unwanted noise is noticeable by the passengers when cylinder on demand is active, the newly developed Active noise control (ANC) system is employed.
